Corner Dancing Guy Now a Full-Time Nursing Student

Dennis Statewright working towards career in nursing.

Former Suisun City sign dancer Dennis Statewright, 25, of Sacramento, says he misses performing for Suisun City residents but his new career as a student now takes up most of his time.

“Sept. 3 of this year, I enrolled at the Sacramento Job Corps in their Clinical Medical Assistant Program,” he said. “That will last seven to 13 months.”

He added that he's actually wanted to get back out and do the sign job but his studies take priority.

“It gets really hot here so I don't think that I will probably be doing that,” he said. “I have thought about doing modeling on the side though.”

Statewright said at some point he does plan to get a job.

Statewright, known as the "Corner Dancing Guy," had been a fixture at Highway 12 and Sunset Avenue for about a year. He would not only advertise for the Cheese Steak Shop by holding a sign but also entertained passerby by utilizing high kicks and splits in his dance routines, but would also wave and greet passing cars.

He got so popular, that Statewright had a Facebook following and had been featured on KCRA.

Statewright said he has been dancing since the age of four and also plays piano.

He also said the Job Corps offers advance training and college programs once students complete the courses.

“I told them I'm open to both,” Statewright said. “I really want to take advantage of them. I'd like to eventually get my registered nurse license.”
