Dan O. Root's 'Field Day' Brings Fitness to the Park

With various activities planned, the PTO-sponsored event hopes to encourage families to stay fit

This year the annual Walk-A-Thon is taking on a new twist as the Parent Teacher Organization of the school prepares for its first ever Field Day. The event, sponsored by the PTO, will be Saturday, May 7.

“Our primary focus is to promote a healthy lifestyle,” said Annabelle Rivera, PTO member.

The Walk-A-Thon will begin at 9:30 a.m. and is expected to last for the duration of the event as participants use the trails of Sam Goepp Park as their walking course. Though only Dan O. Root Elementary students are able to participate in the Walk-A-Thon, families are encouraged to come and cheer on the walkers.

Field Day will begin immediately after at 10:00 a.m. on the grassy areas of Sam Goepp Park and will last until 1:00 p.m. With an emphasis on physical fitness, there will be many activities to choose from that day, including an inflatable obstacle course, rock wall, soccer and football. The PTO will have assistance from many volunteers of the community, including the youth football team Suisun City Titans.

“The coach for the Suisun City Titans is going to come out and he has a group of volunteers that he’s put together,” said Bethany Smith, PTO President .

The PTO is looking for a healthcare worker willing to volunteer their time at a booth where guests can have their blood pressure taken or body mass index calculated. Additions to the event are being added constantly. Already organizations and businesses such as the Salvation Army’s Kroc Center, Subway, In-Shape and Jamba Juice have pledged to help and plan to have booths set up, and still more is being added.

“We still have a couple of things in the works,” Smith said.

Field Day is free to the public, though there will be a small charge for those wanting to try the rock wall and obstacle course.
