So settle in as we start the conversation today with a question from your Moms Council.

Question: My daughter is 12 and wants a cell phone, badly! I’ve told her no in the past, but she keeps asking for it. I know that much of this is because many of her friends have cell phones, but I just don’t think this is necessary- she isn’t even in high school! Am I being too harsh towards her?

My answer: A good guideline would need to start with knowing your child. Are they able to keep track of a phone and not lose it? Will the device be a distraction from their daily duties? Also, if your child/young adult is able to go places by himself/herself, it might be a good idea for them to be able to get a hold of you. The point is, if you can find a practical application for the phone beyond “everyone else has one,” you might have a good reason to get your child a phone.

Worried about your phone bill skyrocketing, or your child going text crazy? Many cell phone companies offer family packages and applications that can make it easy for parents to virtually monitor their youngsters. Keep in mind, too, that a good old fashion curfew can be just as effective when it comes to cell phones.

I believe there are some cases where a 12 year old should be allowed a cell phone. What do YOU think?
