Suisun Library To Host Night Of Poems, Music and Songs

An evening of good music and poetry at the library

The is not just a great place to get books on an assortment of topics, but a place to attend on an assortment of fun events. This December, they will be holding the third-annual holiday musical, “Poetry, Music, and Songs,” a Suisun City Youth Commission presentation.

“It started three years ago and what it was was a continuation of what I was already doing,” said David Knott, President.

The lineup includes music from Christian Deardoff and Willis Hickerson, and poetry from I.S.I.S The Goddess of Poetry.

Deardoff, a music teacher at 851 Music Studios in Benicia, is just what Knott had in mind when he was looking for performers for the musical. All three entertainers are “music educators in the community” and are professionals at their craft, Knott said. Though I.S.I.S. is performing poetry, she is a musical artist, as well.

“The way (I.S.I.S.) delivers her poetry she’s like an educator, and she teaches a life lesson that goes along with her poetry and then she’s produced good music that goes along with her poetry,” he said.

Knott also puts on the library’s summer concert “Music in the Park,” and has done various other concerts around the Bay Area. One of his other chief objectives in putting on the shows is bringing “hybrid” artists that can combine good music with a good message.

“They’re not only just performers and writers and producing their own music, but their producing it with cause and with a reason,” he said.

There is another reason Knott calls them hybrid artists: Each of this year’s performers can be found working various projects. Hickerson is also an author of a new book he is promoting on divorce from a male’s perspective. In each case, the musicians and poet have used their gifts to promote awareness, self improvement and empowerment.

“They’re not just doing music but their combining their other talents alongside their musicianship and their musical ability which makes them quite different,” Knott said.

In the last two years, the audience has filled or came close to filling the seats in attendance. The performance is a holiday musical, including traditional music for season, as well as some traditional music, Knott said. Still, just about anyone who has a love for good music can expect to have a good time.

“You will get some Silent Night in there, some Christmas carols, but you’ll also get a little bit of light jazz, some poetry, and some things that really speak to the heart and speaks to the mind.”

Poems, Music & Songs will be held at the library on Thursday, Dec. 15 at 6 p.m.
