Summer Reading and July Events at Suisun City Library

Suisun City Library encourages young readers to 'Dream Big'

The Suisun City Library is hosting its Summer Reading Program between now and August 11 with the theme “Dream Big—Read.” The program is to help encourage youth, ages 12 and under, to continue challenging their minds even when school is on summer break.

“We just want to keep it fun and keep it going for the summer so they don’t lose their skills,” said Julia Oglesby, Children’s Librarian.

The summer reading program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library group. Every year a new theme is created to help get children in the library and take advantage of the wealth of knowledge available there.

Reading is not limited to the theme however, but each child is able to reach their goals throughout the summer by logging in the length of time that they have read. Younger children are invited to participate, too, even if they are not reading on their own.

“For younger children who are still listening to adults read, we have a special program to help encourage early literacy skills,” Oglesby said. “It includes activities reading for 20 minutes a day, or singing a song, going outside and talking about what you see.”

Prizes are available, including books that young readers can keep. Special events will be held on Wednesdays at various times to invite young readers to explore topics such as water conservation and protecting wildlife with song and presentations. Additionally, gift cards for companies such as Togo’s, Round Table and Fenton’s Creamery will be available as incentive to the young reader.
