With the SoFit City Walk-Run-Party event just around the corner organizers say they need about 15 additional volunteers to help.
The event, which begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, at Solano Mall, 1350 Travis Blvd, Fairfield, will take runners and walkers from around the county on a 5K, 10K ; and SoFit Family Fun Mile loop around the mall.
The race event supports the Solano County Library Foundation and the joint mission with the Solano Mall and SolanoFit Magazine to develop fit minds and fit bodies for a fit future.
According to Captain Jonathan Harvey of the Salvation Army, about 800 county residents have signed up to participate. Those residents represent their respective cities during the event and the challenge is to see which city has the most residents that complete the race.
He added those who choose to be volunteers count toward the city total for their respective city.
“The emphasis their trying to gain is to really build a healthy community and get people focused on the fact that we have such high diabetes rates and such in the county.” he said. “As much as anything, it's going to be the expo after wards. They will have different booths and stuff out there promoting healthy lifestyles. So it really is an effort to rally the county to get out, get some exercise and to realize that we have some huge issues with health in our community. If we would all make a concerted effort to walk and take care of our health, we would have a healthy community.”
