Art In All Forms, Including Eggs

Lawler House presents Text, Texture and Tantalizing Eggs

currently houses a 56-piece exhibit entitled, “Text, Texture, and the Tantalizing Eggs,” which includes art work from gallery members and non-members.

“We had members that painted eggs on a two dimensional surface like a canvas, but we had also heard that there were artists who actually used the eggs themselves as an art form,” said Lawler House Gallery Manager Ken Chew. “We wanted to invite these artists to show us and the community what could be done so we invited eight other artists and they are included in our gallery.”

The exhibit showcases intricately painted eggs that were painted using the traditional Ukranian Pysanky style and Batik and Acid Etching styles. There are also egg paintings and egg carvings as well as numerous pieces of artwork that emphasize texture, lettering or written text. Staff member, Robin Rossi, entered her piece entitled “The Turbulent Awakening,” where she altered a book by cutting the pages and folding them inward ensuring to show off key words and photographs, she said.

“With text, we included artwork with calligraphy, textbook making, a hint of text embedded in imagery.  With texture, the artist is free to make images or ceramic or glass with an emphasis on texture,” Chew said. “Why eggs?  Some members knew that the show would run into the beginning of Spring and wanted to celebrate that with the symbol of new beginnings with eggs.”

The Lawler House Gallery staff is comprised of 22 artists from Fairfield, Vacaville, Suisun, Benicia, and Walnut Creek, with a goal of providing the community with artistic works that presently include paintings in oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastels, jewelry, glass making, metal sculptures, photography, collage, assemblage, quilting, ceramics, Chew said.  Each show is themed and runs for three months, totaling four shows a year. "Text, Texture and the Tantalizing Eggs," runs through May 1.

“We are a part of the City's attempt to boost the quality of life and interest in the harbor (water)front area and we are grateful to them for allowing us to put on these shows.   To see our artwork in the Lawler House setting is a thrill for us.  I encourage your readers to come and visit.  They will be surprised at the quality of what is there,” Chew said.
