Library Events: Reggae to Poetry Slam

Check out two free events at your local library

The will host two special events this week; a reggae-slam to encourage the community to sign up for a library card and the second event is in honor of Black History Month and will celebrate the many contributions of Black Americans through poetry and art.

The “Rocking Go and Izi Reggae-Slam,” scheduled for Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. is an event to promote getting library cards, said Suisun City Library’s Young Adult Librarian Jim Silverman. Performances by renowned Ukulele player Isaiah “Izi” Holokahi and slam poet Van O’Bryan, nicknamed “Go” from group 3rd Eye Collective are guaranteed “to be special,” Silverman said.

The second event, “Black History Month Speaks,” is scheduled for Feb. 26 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The library will showcase student artwork such as posters and displays. There will be guest lecturers and everyone is invited to join in reading “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me,” a Maya Angelou poem to rhythms by DJ Lynn. As part of the day’s event, the 3rd Annual Black History Month Contest, “Let Your Voice Be Heard” Oratorical Competition will take place inside of your local library.
