Got the Munchies?

Not just your ordinary coffee shop

You walk into what looks like someone's living room. There are chairs, couches, picture frames, musical instruments, and even a flat screen television. The front counter is filled with candy and potato chips and decorated with streamers, flyers and a calendar. From the main street this coffee shop is completely hidden; a Suisun City secret that only a handful of people know about. Welcome to ! A slow paced, laid back coffee shop where everyone knows your name.

"When you're here you're family," said Mark Cymanski, a Munchies regular and close friend of the owner. "They see you one time and they remember your name. This place has a real personable feel."

Munchies opened in 1995 and offers hot coffee, blended drinks, more than 30 Italian soda flavors and a mini menu that includes Spam masubis, chicken egg salad, smoked salmon lox and Munchies famous 420 Croissant. Many of the items available were from the original owner, said current owner Kaimana Holokahi, but there is always room for inventions.

Holokahi bought the establishment earlier this year in April and went from being a regular customer to it's current owner. He remembers his first visit at Munchies and enjoyed the laid back atmosphere of the coffee shop. He believes that the slow pace environment and good coffee is what turns the first time customers into regulars.

"This place has become a second home to people," said Darelee Holokahi, Kaimana's wife and Munchies co-owner. "We have our regulars, but we always see new faces and our regulars accept our new customers. Everyone just seems to get a long when they come here."

Currently, Holokahi, his wife Darelee, brother Isaiah and sister-in-law Diana run the shop. Mornings and lunch time are usually the busiest times of the day. Holokahi would love to hire more staff members, but would like the business to flourish a bit more before expanding his crew, he said.

"We may not be able to serve you as quickly as some of the other coffee shops, but if you're patient with us and wait just a little bit longer your drink will be perfect." said Holokahi.

Domenica Piccinini has been a regular at Munchies since it first opened and visits the coffee shop almost five times a week. Piccinini primarily goes to Munchies for the coffee, but enjoys supporting the events held at the establishment.

"It's just a real cool place to come and socialize," said Piccinini. "There's not a lot of business related things going on. People just come to hang out and have a good time."

Not only is Munchies a simple coffee shop, but it's also the home of the Friday Night Jam Session hosted by Holokahi's brother Isaiah "Izi" Holokahi, a talented Ukelele player who also teaches Ukelele lessons at the shop. The Jam Session is an informal invite for people to come in, bring their instruments and just jam, said Daralee Holokahi. Every Thursday night, the shop hosts JDM Night where car enthusiasts compare and contrast import motor vehicles in the Munchies parking lot. The event was actually put together by a couple of Holokahi's friends and has been a successful event thus far, according to the Holokahis.

Munchies is located at 274 Sunset Avenue, Suite G in Suisun. To find out more information about Munchies, visit the official website at www.munchies707.com.
