Business of the Week: Port of Subs

Port of Subs offers fresh ingredients in their sandwiches

Nevada-based has been making delicious, “made fresh to order” sandwiches for over 35 years. Originally named “Sub Shop,” the deli-style restaurant began with two brothers from New Jersey. Now Port of Subs can be found in 150 locations throughout California, Arizona, Idaho, New Mexico,  Oregon, Utah, Washington, as well as Nevada. Still, many are not aware of the great sandwiches the restaurant offers.

“Most of the Port of Subs are located in Nevada…” said Simar Singh, son of the local shop's owner. "They're still trying to expand, but as far as Northern California I believe we’re one of three."

Singh's parents, Chamkaur and Kulwant Singh, purchased the Suisun City Port of Subs from a family friend in 2008. Due to the strict rules for maintaining the franchise, little was needed in terms of improving the restaurant. Instead the family decided to work on getting the word out about their little known sandwich shop. Simar said there are many things that set Port of Subs apart from other regular sandwich restaurants.

“We’re more like a real deli,” said Singh.

Singh said, like a traditional delicatessen, deli meats and cheeses for sandwiches are sliced right before the customer. Breads are baked fresh daily, as well. In fact, freshness takes priority when it comes to the ingredients used to make the sandwiches. They purchase all their vegetables from local farmers markets, including Larry’s Produce.

“We basically go out and buy our own produce rather than have it come in bulks from vendors and stuff,” said Singh. “That’s probably what I’d say separates from a lot of other sandwich places.”

Freshness is a staple of not only the Suisun City location, but all Port of Subs. It is a top factor in the growth of Port of Subs as a company, and what the Simars hopes to get out about their sandwich shop.  Singh said that business has been steady, considering the current economy. He still works with a marketing representative to get the word out as much as possible about their location, even promoting specials in partnership with other business.

“We just recently had a couple of movie nights with Brendan Theaters where you come in and buy a combo meal and you get a free movie ticket,” said Singh.

The restaurant is not just a franchise location, either. Any given day you can see either Singh, his mom, dad, highs school student brother, nursing school student sister, or cousins helping out in the shop. Singh worked in the restaurant while pursuing a degree at UC Davis.

“I just graduated from Davis so I am usually not here too often, but now I’m kinda free from school so I do more.”
