So grab a cup of coffee and settle in as we start the conversation today with a question from your Moms Council:

My 13 year old son wants to dye his hair. He actually looked up some info online and said it is ok, but I am a little uneasy about it. Is hair dye ok for him at this age?

My answer: It seems that younger and younger, kids are walking around with some hair where the natural color has been changed. According to About.com and some other websites, it is okay if your child wants to dye their hair after puberty. It is not recommended prior to that because hair is usually more frail in children prior to puberty.

Still, you may be uneasy for an entirely different reason. If you just don’t think it is appropriate, let your son know that up front. There is no reason to give excuses on how unsafe you might think it may be, if he can just find ways to refute it. For example, if he wants to change his hair color to orange, perhaps a compromise can be reached to lighten the hair a bit without going to the extreme.

This mother feels uneasy about her son dying his hair, but what do you think? When is it okay to let a teen alter their hair color?
