Why Your Garbage Day Changed

Today was the first day of a new garbage day for many people in Suisun City, here's why.

Changing garbage days is an inevitable thing in a growing region, to hear Solano Garbage Company Operations Manager Tony Cincotta tell it, and Suisun and Fairfield were overdue.

While downtown Suisun areas won't notice a change -- they've been set to Mondays for the last 10 years at least, the eastern parts of Suisun had to change days to Monday. The whole city is now on a Monday garbage route.

Cincotta said normally garbage routes should be re-routed every 5-7 years to accomodate growth in all the regions Solano Garbage services in and near the two cities, but that didn't happen until now.

Growth in the northwestern part of Fairfield made some garbage days much larger than others for the crews at Solano Garbage.

"We've experienced a lot fo growth in certain areas," Cincotta said, adding that in addition to northwestern Fairfield, the county areas and Green Valley and Cordelia grew as well.

That meant some routes were just too big.

Suisun, on the other hand, didn't grow so much. It's smaller size made it perfect to become one whole day's route: Monday.

"Suisun fits perfectly in one day," Cincotta said.

Check the map photo for the route areas for other days, and tell us how you feel about Mondays as a garbage day.

I live in eastern Suisun, so I was happy to change from Thursday to Monday. For forgetful me, I figured I'd be able to remember to put out the bins as part of my end-of-weekend chores. The Super Bowl put a crimp in that plan, though, and I'm lucky my household doesn't produce much garbage. There's always next Monday.
