Main Street Rehabilitation On Hiatus

It could be spring before conditions are right to begin work again

The Main Street Rehabilitation Project is on hiatus, according to the city and Argonaut Constructors, the company doing the work.

“We basically are on winter suspension,” said Steve Bare, project construction manager at Argonaut Constructors.

Bad weather and unforeseen setbacks led the project to exceed its original December 2010 deadline, according to the city, and now with the winter wet season seeming in full swing after a mild January, Bare said the city and the company are watching weather forecasts to find a period of three weeks of good weather.

“it’s going to be dependent on a window of opportunity that’s big enough,” he said.

Suisun City Manager Suzanne Bragdon said at a recent city council meeting that cold weather can hamper the quality of asphalt work needed to complete the project, so not only does the weather have to be clear, but it also needs to be mild.

“We like to start as soon as we get a forecast that’s favorable,” Bare said, adding that could mean springtime.

So far, the project has replaced sections of bad curbs and sidewalks along Main Street. It is also slated to dig out pavement failures down to 18 inches and smooth over new asphalt, as well as install new light fixtures on the west side of Main Street from Solano Street to Common Street.

By the start of January, the work had been 45 percent completed.
