Suisun Police Chief & the Salvation Army Board to Walk 10 Miles Sponsoring Summer Camp Scholarships

As part of a $30,000 scholarship program to send 100 Solano County youth to the Salvation Army summer camp, the Police Chief and several Salvation Army Solano County members will walk 10 miles at the Kroc Saturday morning.

Join the Suisun City Police Chief Ed Dadisho, along with Salvation Army Solano County Coordinator Capt. Jonathan Harvey, and several members of the Salvation Army Kroc Center Advisory Board, to help send a group of 100 Solano County kids to camp.

The group will spend Saturday morning, July 20, at the Kroc center, where they will walk 10-miles on treadmills, with a goal of raising $260 per mile, the cost to sponsor one child to camp.

“We have been sending kids to the Salvation Army Camp Del Oro in Nevada City for decades, but until 2012, we could only afford to sponsor about 10,” says Capt. Harvey, “Our advisory board member, John Hodson, decided last year we could do more, he researched and brainstormed, discovering it would cost about $30,000 to send 100 kids, including the cost of transportation.”

Harvey explained, Hodson paid a generous portion of last year's bill, so this year, Suisun’s Golden West Electric owner, Dana Fennie, said he would do a walk-a-thon to pitch in; and so, the fundraising idea was born.

More than $25,000 have already been raised by the board members and several Kroc Center staff; the team is hoping to collect the last $5000 Saturday.

“Scholarships are awarded to local youth from all walks of life,” says Harvey, “kids are nominated by family services offices throughout Solano County.”

The Salvation Army’s Camp Del Oro is a residential camp in Nevada City offering five fun-filled days of educational programs, arts and crafts, sports and other outdoor activities.
