Looking For a Family Friendly Way to Help Feed the Hungry?

The Urban Farmers is looking for volunteers to help harvest fruit this weekend at an orchard in Vacaville.

Thanksgiving is around the corner, and if you want to share your good fortune with the poor, this year, you have a unique and exciting option –a new option that you will tell your kids and grandkids.

Charlotte is a widow who has inherited an orchard of 810 persimmon trees loaded with 150,000+ pounds of fruit. She is not a farmer and wants to donate the fruit to hungry. When I visited her orchard and told her that we are not set up for harvests of this size, her eyes welled up and she said, "please come and harvest what you can. Last year 100,000 pounds of fruit went to waste and I used to cry at night knowing people needed the food,"

If the Amish can raise a barn, why can’t we raise a harvest? We have contacted several companies, universities, schools and other organizations and the out pouring of the support has been inspiring. Our goal is to harvest at least 50,000 pounds of fruit. That's enough food to feed 10,000 people for a day.

Please join us for a day of fun out in the country. We will have all the equipment that is necessary on site and will serve you lunch and water.

Please come prepared to be outdoors for 5 hours. Other items to consider are:

•Personal water

•Hat and sunglasses

•Gardening gloves

•Brown bag to take some fruit home

Yep, this Thanksgiving will be like no other, because instead of giving the poor and the hungry a can of soup, you can serve them fresh fruit. In fact we figured you can feed up to 60 people by volunteering for 5 hours, and that is a banquet bigger than most of us can accommodate at home.

We love kids and as always families are invited to join.

The orchard is located at 7666 Leisure Town Road in Vacaville.  The harvest is scheduled to take place from 10 a.m-3 p.m. on Saturday, November 16, 2013.
