30,000 Residents Without Power in Bay Area

A storm bringing more rain than expected has caused outages and knocked down trees.

Bay City News Service

Gusty winds and rain this morning have caused thousands of Bay Area residents to lose power, a PG&E spokesman said.

There are outages in Sonoma and Napa counties. In Sonoma county, at least one tree has fallen and affected a power line.

As many as 8,500 San Francisco residents were without power in the city's Sunset District, J.D. Guidi said. Crews were on the way to the scene, where power lines were reportedly downed by winds at about 6:a.m., he said.

As many as 20,000 residents in the Santa Rosa area were affected by several separate outages, Guidi said.

In the East Bay, around 1,259 customers were without power, and 1,297 Peninsula residents were impacted by the storms. PG&E crews will work throughout the day to restore power as quickly as possible, Guidi said.

Speaking of power outages, there are power lines down at 844 Silverado Trail. Cross of Skellenger Ln. and Sage Canyon (?). Fire responding. Lines crossing the road.

CHP say they are just telephone lines, however out of caution and policy, traffic is closed in both directions at that area until PG&E can get there. I believe this is where Mumm Winery is in Rutherford. For the life of me I can't remember the names of the roads for alternate routes....

You're welcome Zoe. Seeing how I'm home sick with the flu (and quite bored) I figured I'd turn on my scanner and see what's going on after the storm.

Looks like they have the road clear and are re-opening Silverado Trail in 2 minutes. It also appears that this was the result of a "box-style" truck striking the telephone pole, causing the lines to fall across the road way. I don't know what caused the accident, they didn't say if it was weather related. In the time I typed this, the road has been opened.
