Michael Edward Baker, 39, demanded money from a frightened teller at the Umpqua Bank around 12:12 p.m., Napa police Capt. Jeff Troendly said.

After he left the bank at 305 Soscol Ave., Baker walked past sheriff's Sgt. Joe Jones who was leaving a nearby restaurant in the South Napa Market Place at Imola and Soscol avenues, Troendly said.

Jones had heard the Napa police broadcast about the robbery that was sent to all law enforcement in the county and realized the man walking past him fit the suspect's description, Troendly said.

Jones detained Baker who made a spontaneous statement admitting he committed the robbery, Troendly said.

Witnesses to the robbery positively identified Baker as the robbery suspect, and Baker was booked in the Napa County Department of Corrections for bank robbery, Troendly said.
