Fairfield Double Homicide Suspect Arrested In L.A.

Marcel Rutherford-Chew, 18, of East Palo Alto was arrested.

Information from Fairfield Police Department:

On March 7, 2012 a double homicide occurred on El Toro Court in the Parkway Gardens neighborhood of the City of Fairfield.

It is believed that four occupants of a vehicle were engaged in illicit activities on El Toro Court and this led to those same individuals initiating a gun battle which left two of their associates dead.

The decedents were identified as Vedell Jamar Chew, 24 years, of Fairfield, and Bernard Francis Knight, 18 years, of East Palo Alto, both of whom died from gunshot wounds they received in the late afternoon violence. 

Marcel Rutherford-Chew, 18 years, of East Palo Alto was identified as one of the two associates of the victims and an arrest warrant charging two counts of murder was issued for him.

22-year-old East Palo Alto resident Darren Trahan, the other associate in the vehicle at the time of the murders, was previously arrested as a co-conspirator but was later released due to lack of evidence.

The Fairfield Police Department enlisted the assistance of The United States Marshals Service in order to locate and apprehend Marcel Rutherford-Chew on the outstanding warrant.

On June 26, 2012 at around noon they successfully tracked Chew to a residence in the Van Nuys community in the City of Los Angeles and arrested him without incident.

Fairfield Police detectives took custody of Chew and transported him to Fairfield where he was booked at the Solano County Jail on the outstanding murder warrants in addition to two unrelated burglary warrants that were issued in Redwood City.
