Fairfield Gas Leak Prompts Evacuations, School Shelter-In-Place

A landscaping crew severed a 1-inch plastic gas line at the construction site of the new Solano County Courthouse this morning, a PG&E spokeswoman said.

The gas line break at Empire Street and Union Avenue was reported at 10:03 a.m. and was sealed at 10:52 a.m., Fairfield Fire Battalion Chief Robert Stoffel said.

Eight homes and one business were evacuated and Armijo High School
was advised to shelter in place, Stoffel said.

PG&E crews responded at 10:28 a.m., PG&E spokeswoman Katie Allen said. The landscaping crew was digging trenches for a sprinkler system when it cut the gas line, Allen said.

Evacuation orders were lifted at 11:05 a.m., she said.

Allen said the gas leak serves as a reminder for crews to call PG&E at 811 to learn the location of any underground utilities before digging.
