By Bay City News:

A Fairfield man was sentenced to 52 years to life in state prison for shooting and killing a childhood friend in Pinole in 2011.

Brian Fitch, 43, was sentenced in a Martinez courtroom on Friday for the September 2011 murder of his longtime friend, Jeff McCoy.

A jury convicted Fitch of first-degree murder earlier this year for fatally shooting McCoy multiple times and dumping his body in Pinole, according to Deputy District Attorney Mary Knox.

At trial, he claimed that he shot McCoy in self-defense while the two were driving, Knox said. Police said the pair had had a falling out over a woman that led to the murder.

Prosecutors said Fitch was driving his truck with McCoy in the passenger seat on the morning of Sept. 6, 2011 when he used two guns to shoot his friend. He then dumped McCoy's body and attempted to dispose of the guns, but Pinole police were able to locate them, prosecutors said.
