Fairfield's New Fire Chief Took Over Tuesday

Former Battalion Chief Tony Velasquez is now the Fairfield Fire Department's chief.

Fairfield native Tony Velasquez took the reins of that city's fire department Tuesday.

Velasquez, who started with the Fairfield Fire Department as a volunteer in 1989, takes over for retiring Chief Vince Webster. 

He'll be honored in a pinning ceremony on April 11.

With the April 2, 2013 retirement of Chief Vince Webster, former Battalion Chief Tony Velasquez rises to Fire Chief for the Fairfield department that answers more than 9,000 call a year.

Hometown son, Tony Velasquez graduated from Fairfield High School, has been involved in local sports as a player, coach, and board member. He began his service with the Fairfield Fire Department in 1989 as a volunteer, and was hired full-time in 1992. Tony has served as a firefighter, engineer paramedic, captain, and battalion chief in the department.

Chief Velasquez is committed to the profession - he is a state certified paramedic, a master instructor for California State Fire Training, holds a California Chief Officer certification, and recently completed his first year of the Executive Fire Officer program at the National Fire Academy. Tony has an Associate of Science degreee in Fire Science from Solano Community College, and went on to earn a Bachelor's degree in Human Relations, and a Master's degree in Organizational Leadership.

Chief Velasquez steps into his new role immediately, and will be honored  with an official pinning ceremony on April 11, 2013.
