Fairfield: Suspected Bank Robber Arrested

Fairfield police arrested a man suspected of attempting to rob a
Fairfield bank Monday, and investigators discovered he was a suspect in bank robberies in four other Bay Area cities, police said.

Just after 10 a.m., a man attempted to enter First Bank at 2407
Waterman Blvd dressed in all black and wearing a knit hat with holes cut in it.

The bank has a security feature requires all customers to be
electronically buzzed in to the building, said Fairfield Police Officer Cleo Mayoral.          

Bank employees found the man's appearance suspicious, so they did
not allow him to enter and instead called police. As he struggled with the door, one teller noticed that the man had a firearm in the waistband of his pants.

The man then walked away, through the bank's parking lot, which is
adjacent to a Safeway and other businesses. Police responded to the call and detained the suspect, Archie Ned Williams, 38, of Oakland, at gunpoint.

A replica handgun was found in Williams's waistband, and based on
witness accounts, police arrested Williams on suspicion of attempted bank robbery.

Detectives for Fairfield police were able to link Williams to another bank robbery in Benicia on July 15. Benicia police sent a detective
to Fairfield to investigate, who also placed Williams under arrest.

Benicia police said that Williams is suspected of robbing a Wells
Fargo bank inside of a Raley's supermarket on Southampton Road in Benicia on July 15. Lt. Mike Daley of Benicia police said the suspect walked into the supermarket and threatened tellers with a gun at around 7:00 p.m. that day and fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Fairfield police contacted other police departments, and
discovered that Williams is a suspect in at least three other bank robberies in Dixon, Vallejo and Suisun City, Mayoral said.

Williams was booked into Solano County Jail for attempted bank
robbery and probation violation. As Williams is on probation, he is not
eligible for bail.
