FAIRFIELD (BCN) - A fire at a two-story home in Fairfield displaced six family members early Tuesday morning, a fire battalion chief said.

The blaze was reported at 4:26 a.m. at a home in the 400 block of Marigold Drive, near Sunrise Park, after a male occupant heard something in the garage and discovered the flames when he opened the garage door, Battalion Chief Matt Luckenback said.

The man woke up the rest of his family, and everyone -- including two dogs -- escaped safely through the front door, Luckenback said.

The house was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, and it took about an hour to control the two-alarm blaze, he said.

Cypress trees on one side of the house caught fire, but firefighters kept the flames from spreading to the house next door, Luckenback said.

The fire started in a garage that contained two vehicles, destroying one of them, a classic Ford Mustang from the 1960s, the battalion chief said.

The fire caused at least $200,000 in damage, and the home will be uninhabitable for several months, Luckenback said. The American Red Cross has found shelter for the family and their two pets.

The cause of the fire is undetermined but the blaze is not considered suspicious, Luckenback said. There were no injuries.

The Cordelia Fire Department also responded.
