Lightning Strikes Solano County: Did You See It?

The purple dots in the above map represent lightning strikes. The strikes likely caused multiple wildfires in Napa, Sonoma, Solano counties, according to officials.

Lightning lit up the night sky early Monday, causing quite the light show for some Solano County residents.

Around 12:30 a.m., two lightning strikes were seen in Napa County, one in Sonoma County and six in Solano County, according to officials.

The Contra Costa Times reports that more than 200 lightning strikes were reported in Sonoma County alone during the storm.

Some of the strikes throughout the area caused grass fires, like one reported in Vacaville early Monday morning. About 20 fires were burning Monday in wildland areas in Sonoma, Solano, Lake and Colusa counties, Cal Fire spokeswoman Suzanne Blankenship told Bay City News.

Of the 20 fires, 13 are in Sonoma County. Eight of those fires are burning off state Highway 128 in the Geyserville and Knights Valley areas, Blankenship said. Four fires were reported in Solano County, two in Lake County and one in Colusa County.

Officials are unsure if all were caused by lightning strikes, but they were reported after numerous strikes were reported.

To see the extent of the lighting storm, the National Weather Service shared a map on their Facebook page showing where lightning strikes were reported through 6 a.m. Monday.

“Hundreds of strikes can be seen across North and East bay counties of Napa, Sonoma, Contra Costa, and Alameda in our forecast area,” they wrote.

The data in the map was provided by the California's National Forests and the National Interagency Fire Center.

Each lightning strike is marked with a purple dot.
