UPDATED 1:30 PM

State Highway 12 is closed in both directions in Fairfield this afternoon after police shot an armed man who attempted to attack officers with a knife this morning, a police sergeant said.

Police received a disturbance call from an apartment complex in the 200 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, several blocks from Highway 12, at about 9:30 a.m., Fairfield polcie Sgt. Matt Bloesch said.

Officers arrived to find a female victim with major traumatic injuries. While rendering aid to her, the officers attained suspect information, he said.

Other officers searched the surrounding area and found the suspect, who led them on a foot pursuit onto Highway 12, he said.

Police tried to subdue the suspect with less-lethal weapons but were unsuccessful, Bloesch said. The suspect then attempted to attack officers with a knife, and at least one officer shot him, Bloesch said.

The suspect was airlifted to a hospital, but Bloesch did not know his condition.

Bloesch said both directions of state Highway 12 will be closed for several hours between Pennsylvania and Beck avenues.

The officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave, Bloesch said.
