A smoker is being blamed for a fire that erupted in the vegetation along Highway 680 at Parish Road this afternoon.
The Cordelia Fire Department said that cigarette butts were found at the scene of the fire. The department was aided by Benicia firefighters to combat the flames that burned about a quarter acre of brush.
The amount of vegetation that has grown on that stretch of the highway provided ample fuel for the flames, according to the fire department.
It took the fire crews about 30 minutes to extinguish the flames. The roadway was closed to allow the fire crews to initiate the attack, but is now re-opened.
No injuries were reported.
Anyone planning to drive along south Highway 680 may want to take an alternate route. A roadside grass fire is prompting officials to close down the highway to allow fire crews to combat the flames.
We will update the story as soon as we receive more information.
