Two cars overturned in an accident on southbound Interstate Highway 680 in Fairfield this afternoon, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The crash, involving at least two cars, was reported at 4:40 p.m. near Gold Hill Road. A Sig-alert was issued at 4:54 p.m., CHP Officer Peter Van Eckhardt said. At least one person suffered major injuries in the crash, Van Eckhardt said.

Emergency crews had arrived at the scene as of 5:15 p.m. One lane is blocked and traffic is zigzagging through the crash area, which left one car overturned in the fast lane and the other on its roof on the left shoulder, Van Eckhardt said.

The CHP said traffic is backing up north of the accident and drivers should expect delays.
