Suisun City Police Take Part in "Click It or Ticket"

As you head out of town for Thanksgiving, police want you to make sure to buckle up.

The wants everybody to make it to their holiday destinations in one piece, issuing a notice on www.nixle.com about the importance of wearing seat belts.

Police will be making sure motorists have their seat belts on as part of the department's "Click It or Ticket" program.

"No one wants to start the holidays off wrong with a ticket," said Police Chief Ed Dadisho in a press release. "Save your money for turkey and buying presents for loved ones – don't throw it away simply because you failed to buckle up."

National and state traffic safety data from state and federal officials show that while seat belt use is at a high point of 83 percent nationwide, almost 45 million Americans still fail to buckle up when they get into a vehicle.

Data from the California Office of Traffic Safety indicates that more than 1,300 Californians survived collisions and other roadway mishaps by wearing seat belts last year.

According to the Suisun City Police department, national statistics show that those who are most likely to avoid wearing a seat belt are teens, young adults, males, nighttime riders and people traveling in pickup trucks.

Suisun City Police said statewide, overall traffic deaths declined by 23 percent, from 3,995 in 2007 to 3,081 in 2009 due, partly, to the more frequent use of seat belts. Total traffic fatalities are at their lowest levels in 60 years.

"Sadly, the holidays, which for many are the happiest time of the year, is also one of the deadliest and most tragic," Dadisho said in the release.
