3rd Grade Student With Live Ammo at Dixon School Monday Morning Causes Alarm

After a third grade student was found to have live bullets at school today, Superintendent Brian Dolan wants parents to be assured that the situation was handled promptly and appropriately and that any potential danger has been eliminated.

A third grade student handing out bullets caused alarm at Gretchen Higgins school in Dixon Monday morning.

According to a press release from the Dixon Unified School District, an incident took place at Gretchen Higgins Elementary School today that was a cause for significant concern among staff and students.

In attempt to calm concerns, information is being shared in broad details, in an effort to provide reassurance that the situation was handled promptly and appropriately and that any potential danger has been eliminated.

At approximately 9:50 today, Principal Tracy Linyard was informed by a teacher that a 3rd Grade student was in possession of what she believed to be live ammunition in the classroom.

Upon investigation, it was determined that the student brought five live bullets to school and had passed one to another student. The second student informed his teacher immediately, allowing the bullets to all be gathered and secured.

Dixon Police responded to the school and worked with the Administration on addressing the situation and imposing disciplinary consequences.

Superintendent Brian Dolan reminds staff and residents that, as always, the safety of school campuses is of paramount importance and states, "we will work to ensure that both students and staff are safe at school. While today’s situation was dangerous, a student did the right thing by reporting it and staff responded correctly as well. Safety remains an issue that we must address together and we are committed to doing so."
