A pedestrian who was struck by a pickup while crossing North Texas Street in Fairfield Saturday evening died Sunday morning at the John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, a police sergeant said.

George Watson, 54, a Fairfield area transient, was struck by a Ford Ranger pickup in the 1800 block of North Texas Street around 5:55 p.m., Sgt. Matt Bloesch said.

He was taken to the North Bay Medical Center in Fairfield then was flown to John Muir Medical Center, Bloesch said.

The Contra Costa County coroner's office said Watson died at 6:46 a.m. Sunday.

Bloesch said witnesses said Watson dropped a bottle of beer as he left the driveway of a liquor store, became upset and walked across North
Texas Street 30 feet away from a crosswalk with flashing lights, Bloesch said.

Witnesses said there was some indication Watson had been drinking, Bloesch said.

The Fairfield man who was driving the Ford Ranger pickup stopped at the scene and there is no indication he was speeding or intoxicated, Bloesch said.

Police have had previous contacts with Watson being intoxicated in public, Bloesch said.
