Fire officials are asking the public for help in determining the cause of the Monticello vegetation fire, which has burned nearly 6,500 acres near Lake Berryessa in Solano and Yolo Counties.

The fire, which was 71 percent contained as of 8 p.m. Tuesday, began burning Friday night near the Monticello Dam, threatening 40 structures and causing the Golden Bear Estates and Canyon Creek Resort campground to be evacuated.

All evacuation orders have now been lifted and all public roads are open, but firefighters continue to battle the blaze in steep, rugged terrain with difficult access, according to Cal Fire officials.

Erratic wind shifts have challenged suppression efforts, Cal Fire officials said.

Cal Fire investigators now urge anyone in the area of Highway 128 between the Canyon Creek Resort and Pleasant Valley Road between the hours of 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. on July 4 to call the Cal Fire Arson Hotline at (800) 468-4408.

Those who have information or descriptions of people or vehicles that were in the area can remain anonymous, Cal Fire officials said.

Yep, just what I knew.... like the Butts fire - deliberately set....Sad, sick people.

The Butt's fire was reportedly started by landscaping equipment. I'm not sure I'd call that deliberate, unless there's more information that I am unaware of?

Just by looking at the map of the fire, doesn't it seem plausible that it was started by a cigarette but tossed out of a car? It seems, based on the map to have started near the road.
