Do You Agree With Suisun City's 'Smart Growth' Approach?

Suisun City Council members' plans for reviving the city has spurred growth over the past 30 years, but differing opinions on how it should continue to grow puts the city at a cross roads.

Suisun City's transformation over the past 30 years has stirred up conversation as city officials prepare "priority development" in the Old Town waterfront areas.

For some city officials the transformation began long before terms like "priority development" and "smart growth" were popular and have been talking about making Old Town more pedestrian-friendly since the early 1990s. City Councilwoman Jane Day told The Daily Republic she’s more interested in having more businesses come to Old Town to generate more sales tax revenue.

Day didn’t blast One Bay Area in the same manner that its most vehement critics do. But she recently opposed Suisun City applying for a $163,000 One Bay Area grant to help further plan the Suisun City priority development area in keeping with One Bay Area goals.

“I don’t care for regional planning,” Day said. “I believe small cities usually end up the loser in regional planning.”

Day's opinion is one that commenters on this site have made note of in the past.

Day also noted that Suisun City's unique identity should be maintained and city council members should not be so quick to take grant money in the hopes of transforming the city into one of its neighboring towns.

What do you think? Should City Council members continue to restore the city's historic identity or is it high time Suisun City updated its image like neighboring cities? Tell us in the comments section below.
