SCC Board Delays Vote On Theater Program

The board moved to delay an expected vote to cut funding from the Solano College theater program in order to give the program time to come up with a funding idea.

The Solano Community College board had been ready to end its contract with the nonprofit Solano College Theater Association last night, the Times-Herald reports, but it held off to deliberate firther and give the group an opportunity to come up with a funding solution.

The board tabled the vote until its second meeting in June.

The college said the contract was worth $750,000, but the number has been disputed by college employees. So also has the college's contention that its cuts would result in a more student-centered theater program.

College President Jowel Laguerre warned the board that even though it was delaying the vote, the end result may be inevitable -- but that he was open to exploring ways to save the SCTA's funding source, the Times-Herald reports.

SCC has already cut summer school classes and made numerous other reductions.
