Fairfield-Suisun Schools May Push Back Election and Extend Board Terms

Suisun City and Fairfield schools may switch their elections from odd years to even years.

The Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District doesn't want to be left behind.

Several other public agencies in Solano County are planning to move their elections from odd years to even years, hoping to consolidate with statewide elections and save money.

So far, Fairfield, Benicia, the Benicia Unified School District, schools in Vacaville and Vallejo, and the Solano County Office of Education have taken steps to move their election dates or are considering a switch.

On Thursday night, the school district that includes Suisun City will consider a similar proposal.

"Should the city [of Fairfield] take action to move its elections to even-numbered years, there is a potential for an increase in election costs to the school district if it doesn't also change," a staff report states.

One unintended side effect of such a change: all board members currently serving would have their terms extended by one year.
