Local Students Spend A Day In Their Pajamas

Suisun City teachers and students are joining with the rest of the nation today to encourage children to learn to read -- and read well -- in the annual Read Across America event.

The annual day of outreach is held on the birthday of renowned children's writer Dr. Seuss, and in California is organized in part by the California Teachers Association.

Events range from simple readings of children's books at local libraries to larger events with live entertainment and elected officials in attendance.

In Suisun City, students at will spend the day in their pajamas, listening to a reading from third grade teacher Corie Barloggi's book about her cat, and then hear her explain how to write and publish a book.

First grade students will perform a play and students will be given free time to read in the grass in the afternoon.

In San Francisco, fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White and police Chief Greg Suhr will join Board of Education Commissioners Norman Yee and Rachel Norton for a reading at 9 a.m.

They will be reading Seuss classics like "The Cat in the Hat," and "Green Eggs and Ham" aloud to students at Sunset Elementary School at 1920 41st Ave.

In Oakland, students at New Highland Academy and RISE Community School at 8521 A St. will receive a backpack full of books from Comcast, and enjoy a performance by former teacher turned magician Magic Dan.

Similar events will be held in San Jose, Brisbane, Concord and Fairfield and elsewhere in the Bay Area.
