Key to Awesomeness: Jessica aspires to be an actress when she gets older. So when she received a flyer for the gospel play “Surrender Row” by Simply Shyla Productions, she went down to try out right away. Soon after she starred in her first role ever.

“Some of it was singing and (the director) helped me with my vocals-- to breathe in and breathe out,” said Jessica. “It was really a nice play and it helped a lot with what I want to become.”

Jessica said she had a hard time adjusting when she moved to Fairfield from Sacramento with her family 3 years ago, and it really showed in her school life. It was not until she read “Letters to a Young Sister” by Hill Harper, a book aimed at helping young African American girls with self-image and setting goals, that she decided to make a change in her lfe.

“It has helped me to do better and to calm down my spirit and not let things get to me,” she said.
