Is Suisun City Home to a Blossoming Sports Reporter?

Allen Duncan took home top honors in sports reporting.

 

A Suisun City student could be blazing a path that will eventually lead to a future in professional sports reporting. 

Writing student Allen Duncan just took home first place honors in online sports reporting from the Society of Professional Journalists.

Much of Duncan's decision to pursue writing professionally was cultivated by his upbringing, according to the organization.

Duncan is 23 years old and earned BFA, Writing degree- Creative Writing minor from Savannah College of Art and Design this spring.

He won for his story: "Money reallocations disband three student teams."

"I grew up in a family of storytellers," Duncan said. "The emphasis we put on intelligent conversation, humor, and clear communication made the pursuit of writing a natural decision."

We don't currently have information about Duncan's specific submission to the contest, but we'll update this story when we do. 

The Mark of Excellence awards program honors the best student journalism in the southern United States from colleges and universities in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. SCAD students and alumni placed first, second or third in 16 of 39 categories covering photography, Web, broadcast and print journalism.

Each first-place winner will go on to compete nationally against winners from 11 other regions. SPJ will announce the national winners May 2, and will recognize them at the Excellence in Journalism 2013 conference, Aug. 24-26, in Anaheim, California.

Entry in the 2012 Mark of Excellence Awards was open to anyone enrolled in a U.S. college or university studying for an academic degree in 2012 and international SPJ student members. Students with full-time, professional journalism experience, beyond internships, were not eligible. Entries must have been published or broadcast during the 2012 calendar year.
