Little League Season Now In Full Swing

Suisun American saw its first pitch thrown on the first Saturday of April.

It took patience, but after dealing with the elements the past few weeks – including a freak hail/sleet storm last Thursday – Suisun American Little League has finally kicked off its season.

League president Ted Scibeck said the first pitch was thrown on Saturday April 2, after the initial start was delayed due to the precipitation in late March.

“This is going to be a good fun year to where people are going to want to come back and have fun the next,” he said. “That’s how we measure success here.”

The league has 14 teams this season, of which Scibeck said eight already have paid sponsors.

“We have our normal (paid) sponsors,” Scibeck said. “All of our Suisun City councilmen are always supportive of us.”

Scibeck didn’t name specific sponsors, but he added that city councilmen also appear at the games whenever he asks them to.

“I think the parents really like that,” he said. “I don’t know how many other cities have that.”

Scibeck mentioned that Solano Garbage Company has jumped on board as a sponsor, something that he was surprised about.

“They do so much for everybody,” he said. “Every time there’s something going on in the Fairfield-Suisun area you can count on Solano Garbage throwing their backing behind it. I was really shocked we got sponsorship from them because of all they do. I was really happy with that.”

Scibeck said he spent days trying to get the fields in shape to play baseball. Brick dust (a blend of crushed brick and clay) has also been used to help improve the condition of the playing fields.

At one point, Scibeck and his crew of volunteers worked almost 12-hour days to get the field prepped for the start of games.

“We’re just a volunteer organization so everybody here just does what they can,” he said. “We did have a couple of Saturdays where the parents came down and helped out.”

Having the parents come out to help really pleased Scibeck.

“I was really shocked because usually you have one really good clean-up day and then everything else falls on our (league officials) shoulders,” he said.

That didn’t happen this time.

“Both clean-up days that we had, we had a lot of parents here, and a lot of parents who stayed from the beginning to end,” Scibeck said. “We don’t put a time constraint on them. We’ll take what we can get.”

The league will have regular season play through June 12th. The Tournament of Champions  should kickoff on June 18th. All-Stars are slated to start on the July 4th weekend this year.

Games will be played throughout the regular season on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. A complete list of games can be found on the league’s website.
