FFPD: Dream Dresses For Prom Needs Your Help

This program unites prom dresses with needy students who would otherwise not be able to afford them.

From FFPD and The Fairfield Youth Commission:

The Fairfield Youth Commission, an advisory body to the Fairfield City Council on youth related issues, is seeking assistance with its 2012 Dream Dress Closet program. The annual Dream Dress Closet Giveaway is open to local high school student who are in need of prom attire (or similar event attire) and who have limited financial means.

The mission of the Dream Dress Closet Giveaway is to promote self-esteem and to ensure that no student has to forfeit the prom experience due to finance hardship. To prepare for the giveaway, the Fairfield Youth Commission collects new and gently used formalwear, shoes, and accessories suitable for prom.  Dresses, shoes, purses, and accessories may be dropped off at the Fairfield PAL Matt Garcia Youth Center Monday-Friday 3 - 9pm. The Fairfield PAL Matt Garcia Youth Center is located at 250 Travis Blvd, in Fairfield.

The Dream Dress Giveaway event will be held at the Fairfield PAL Matt Garcia Youth Center on Saturday, April 21, 2012 from 12 - 3 p.m.

Over 100 young ladies received dresses last year. New for this year, the Soroptimists of Solano County will provide a complementary professional photograph for young women. The event is open to all local high school students who will be given an opportunity to collect one dress of their choice.

In addition to collecting formalwear, the Fairfield Youth Commission is also looking for adults to help with the event. The Commission is actively recruiting for seamstresses to help make minor alternation during the event, make-up artists to assist with prom consultations, hair stylist to work with girls on their perfect prom hairstyle, style coaches to assist with dress selection and color consultations, and volunteers to help with refreshments, and participant check in and out.

About the Fairfield Youth Commission
The Commission was established in 1996 to create opportunities for youth input and involvement in local government. It is made up of 15 Fairfield residents ages 12 to 21 who are appointed by the Mayor and the City Council. In addition, the Commission may also choose to host and sponsor recreation and community events, champion specific causes and review city policies related to youth. The Fairfield Youth Commission meets on the first Monday of each month in the Fairfield City Council Chamber at 7 p.m. All interested parties are invited and encouraged to attend meetings. An agenda is published prior to each meeting. Each Youth Commissioner represents their high school and the youth in their community. Commissioners meet with local leaders like the Mayor, the City Council, the Community Services Commission and community groups to advocate for local youth. The Commission is responsible for working to make sure that youth are represented in the political process. For more information, please call 707.421.1541.
