Foundation Secures Support For Movie Nights, Needs Your Help

The Suisun City Community Services Foundation recently secured funding for the 2012 lineup of summer movies at the Suisun City Waterfront.

It's one of the first successes the group has pulled off. Previously, they were able to get the support of PG&E with a matching grant of $10,000, and pledge donations from Solano Garbage Company, Hampton Inn & Suites, Portrero Hills Landfill, and Medic Ambulance.

But there is something more important for them to secure: the financial support of the public. As the group says, just $25 from 1,000 people will clinch funding for July 4th.

Today the sent out a community message urging residents to help in any way they can to keep community events in Suisun City. In my experience, many people don't realize that with the loss of redevelopment money, the city cannot afford to pay for July 4th fireworks this year.

City Councilman Mike Hudson said in some ways the SCCSF is a better way to pay for community events than redevelopment money.

"It's a fair pitch, you know what you're getting with the donation," he said. "...For years we had redevelopment. We used that to spur economic development here and pay for community events. Now we have a mechanism to do that (in SCCSF) that I think in many ways might be better than redevelopment because the public has a direct voice in what happens."
