Mission Solano Needs Help To Feed 600 Homeless

The charity had a hard week, almost running out of food on Thursday due to unforeseen events

Mission Solano had a tough week, and the longtime Solano County charity needs your help right away to make sure it gets on steady footing.

The charity nearly ran out of food in its pantry one day before its regular family food distribution Friday at the Community Outreach Center at 740 Travis Blvd. in Fairfield.

Add to those woes a broken freezer discovered too late to save cases of chicken meat stored there and an electrical box that shorted out.

While generous community members have stepped up to provide a new freezer and help fix the electrical system, the charity badly needs food and money to buy food.

Mission Solano Chief Operating Officer Rod Malloy said the charity gets special deals on buying food from community suppliers, resulting in a cost of just $1.79 per meal, making a mere $20 donation pay for more than 11 meals. Mission Solano makes it easy to give money through a donation web portal on its web page, www.missionsolano.org

There are more than two dozen Mission Solano barrels out in the communities and Travis Air Force Base that routinely pick up canned goods and staple items for Mission Solano, but the charity could always use another business that is willing to house a barrel for an ongoing food drive.

Mission Solano officials say the average 600 homeless men, women and children it feeds on a daily basis need a steady supply of food, one that lately has been harder to come by.

So it needs your help, your friends’ help and the community’s help to keep up with the need in these hard times.

Malloy said Mission Solano staff took up a collection among themselves Thursday to get enough food to feed families on Friday.

Mission Solano Executive Director Ron Marlette gave out some tips for people who want to donate items to Mission Solano:

  • Food is often in short supply at the mission, especially fresh fruits and vegetables, canned juices and meats.  These can be used in the meals the mission supplies or in food baskets given to needy families.
  • Quilts and blankets are useful at the mission and to give to local people in need.
  • Heavy coats, boots and warm clothing are useful for those wanting to shower and clean-up at the mission.  New underwear and socks are always in demand.
  • Disposable diapers are needed for homeless and poor children.  Families struggling to keep warm may not have enough extra cash for diapers.
  • Toiletry articles are always in demand and short supply.
  • Volunteers are needed to help sort clothing and other donated items, provide transportation and delivery of supplies to people in need, or for assistance in serving meals.
